Cowpea mottle virus (CMeV) is a plant virus belonging to the genus Sobemovirus. This pathogen is of significant agronomic importance due to its ability to cause severe mosaic and mottle symptoms in leguminous crops, particularly cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), leading to reduced yield and quality.

The virus affects plant physiology by interfering with chloroplast development and structural integrity of leaves. Symptoms typically include distinct chlorotic mottling, leaf distortion, and stunted plant growth, which significantly affects the photosynthetic capacity and overall biomass production of the infected crops.

The biology of CMeV is predominantly characterized by transmission via insect vectors, primarily beetles (Coleoptera). These insects acquire the virus during feeding on infected plant tissue and transmit it to healthy plants. Mechanical transmission and occasional seed-borne spread also play roles in the dissemination of the pathogen within agricultural systems.

Environmental factors such as high humidity and optimal temperatures promote the activity of insect vectors, thereby increasing the prevalence of the virus. Agricultural areas with overlapping planting seasons or adjacent wild leguminous host reservoirs are at a higher risk of CMeV outbreaks throughout the growing season.

Management and control strategies focus on reducing the population of insect vectors and minimizing viral reservoirs. Growers are advised to implement integrated pest management (IPM) to control beetle populations, utilize virus-free seeds, and plant resistant varieties where available. Regular monitoring and weeding of surrounding areas are essential to prevent the spread of the virus into healthy fields.
