Description
Criconemoides xenoplax is a species of ectoparasitic nematode within the phylum Nematoda. These microscopic organisms are known as ring nematodes due to the prominent, thick cuticular rings on their bodies. They are significant pests in agricultural systems, particularly in orchards where they target the roots of perennial woody plants.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include stone fruit species such as peaches, nectarines, plums, and cherries, as well as various grape rootstocks. By feeding on the roots with their long stylets, these nematodes cause physical damage, which leads to stunted root growth, reduced uptake of water and nutrients, and chlorosis in the canopy.
The biological cycle of this nematode takes place primarily in the soil around the roots. They go through several larval stages before reaching maturity. They are slow-moving and tend to aggregate in the rhizosphere. Their survival depends on the presence of living roots, which serve as their primary source of nutrition and habitat throughout the seasons.
The development of Criconemoides xenoplax is favored by well-drained, sandy soils. Spread occurs through the movement of infested soil, machinery, and contaminated nursery stock. These nematodes are particularly notorious for their role in the "peach tree short life" syndrome, where their damage predisposes trees to lethal bacterial cankers caused by Pseudomonas syringae.
Management strategies focus on prevention and risk reduction. Strategies include testing soil for nematode populations prior to planting, choosing sites with low initial populations, and utilizing resistant rootstocks where available. Furthermore, maintaining soil health and minimizing tree stress can help orchards withstand the presence of these pests, though severe infestations may require soil fumigation.
