Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus

Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Tobamovirus genus. This virus primarily infects members of the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, watermelons, pumpkins, and melons, causing significant economic losses in global agriculture.

The disease manifests as mosaic-like patterns on leaves, characterized by alternating light and dark green patches. As the infection progresses, leaves may become distorted or stunted, and fruits often exhibit surface mottling, yellowing, or uneven ripening. In severe cases, the entire plant structure weakens, resulting in reduced fruit set and poor quality.

The biological cycle of the virus is characterized by extreme environmental persistence. It can survive in contaminated seeds, plant debris, and infested soil for extended periods. It is highly contagious and spreads primarily through mechanical contact, such as pruning, handling plants, or utilizing contaminated gardening tools and equipment.

Optimal environmental conditions for viral progression are found in warm climates with high light intensity, which is typical for greenhouse production. Under these circumstances, the virus can quickly infect adjacent plants, leading to widespread outbreaks if sanitary protocols are not strictly maintained during daily cultivation practices.

• Utilize certified virus-free seed lots for all cucurbit plantings.
• Implement strict sanitation of all tools, hands, and greenhouse structures.
• Remove and destroy symptomatic plants immediately to limit spread.
• Practice crop rotation to minimize soil-borne viral accumulation.

Currently, there is no chemical cure for viral infections in plants. Therefore, management is entirely dependent on prevention, rigorous hygiene, and the use of resistant crop varieties. Monitoring fields and greenhouses for the first signs of mottling is essential to contain the pathogen early in the season.
