Description
Downy mildew of cucumber, caused by the oomycete Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a devastating disease affecting cucurbit crops globally. This obligate pathogen specifically targets the foliage, leading to severe chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and ultimately, a significant reduction in fruit yield and quality.
The pathogen is classified within the kingdom Chromista and the phylum Oomycota. Unlike true fungi, oomycetes have specific reproductive cycles dependent on high humidity and water presence. Pseudoperonospora cubensis is highly host-specific, primarily infecting cucumber, melon, and pumpkin families.
The disease progression involves the release of sporangia, which are dispersed by wind and splashing water. Upon landing on a leaf surface, the pathogen enters through stomata under conditions of leaf wetness. The infection is characterized by angular yellow spots confined by leaf veins, followed by the appearance of a dark, downy fungal mass on the leaf underside.
Optimal conditions for disease development include relative humidity above 80% and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Dew formation on leaves during nights is particularly conducive to rapid sporulation. Without effective intervention, the disease can spread throughout a crop in less than two weeks.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control.
