Taxonomic classification and nature of the pathogen. Curvularia aeria belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and the genus Curvularia. It is a microscopic filamentous fungus that acts as a significant plant pathogen, infecting various agricultural and ornamental crops, while also demonstrating saprotrophic capabilities in the environment.

Diseases and host crops. This pathogen is the causal agent of Curvularia diseases, typically manifesting as leaf spots, stem rot, and seed infection. Host crops include cereals (maize, rice, wheat), cotton, soybean, and various tropical vegetables. Infection often leads to reduced seed quality, poor grain filling, and premature senescence of vegetative tissues.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves the production of conidia, which are disseminated by wind, splashing rain, and insects. Upon landing on a suitable plant surface, conidia germinate to form germ tubes that penetrate plant tissues through stomata or mechanical wounds. During colonization, the fungus secretes specific toxins that disrupt plant cells, leading to rapid lesion development.

Conditions for development. Curvularia aeria thrives in warm conditions with temperatures ranging from +25°C to +30°C combined with high relative humidity. Prolonged rainy periods and dense plant canopies create an ideal microclimate for the accumulation of inoculum. The fungus survives as mycelium in infested crop residues in the soil and is also seed-borne, allowing for its transmission across seasons.

Harmfulness and control measures. Economic losses occur due to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and significant yield reduction. Control strategies should be integrated:

  • Utilizing certified, fungicide-treated seeds.
  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host species.
  • Deep plowing or disposal of infected crop debris.
  • Applying systemic fungicides (e.g., triazoles or strobilurins) at early symptom onset.
  • Managing plant density to enhance air circulation and reduce canopy humidity.
