Curvularia clavata is a fungal plant pathogen belonging to the genus Curvularia, within the Ascomycota phylum. This fungus is recognized as a significant agent affecting a variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, grasses, and occasionally broadleaf plants. It typically acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, thriving on plant tissues and contributing to reduced agricultural productivity in warm climates.

The primary symptom of infection is known as curvularia leaf spot or kernel blight. Affected areas exhibit dark, necrotic lesions that may enlarge and merge, leading to premature leaf senescence and death. In infected grain crops, the kernels may become discolored, shriveled, and covered in a dark, velvety mycelial mat, which significantly degrades both the yield volume and the quality of the harvest.

The biology of Curvularia clavata relies on its ability to overwinter as mycelia or conidia in infested seeds, soil, and crop debris. Upon favorable environmental conditions, the conidia germinate and initiate infection. The life cycle is largely dependent on the availability of moisture on plant surfaces, which facilitates the germination of spores and the subsequent colonization of the host plant's internal tissues.

Economic impact is significant due to both grain yield loss and potential mycotoxin contamination in some contexts. To mitigate the risks associated with Curvularia clavata, a multi-faceted management strategy is recommended:

  • Utilizing certified disease-free seeds treated with broad-spectrum fungicides.
