Cylindrocarpon liriodendri

Cylindrocarpon liriodendri

Description

Cylindrocarpon liriodendri (synonym: Ilyonectria liriodendri) is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is recognized as a significant causative agent of root and crown rot diseases in a variety of woody plants and perennial crops.

The primary economic impact of this pathogen is its association with "Black Foot" disease in grapevines. This disease primarily affects nursery stock and young vines, causing significant vascular damage, stunted growth, and death of plants within the first few years of establishment in the vineyard.

The biology of the pathogen involves both asexual and sexual reproductive stages. The fungus survives in the soil and on infected plant debris as dormant chlamydospores. These structures are highly resistant to environmental stress, allowing the fungus to persist in a field for extended periods even in the absence of a host crop.

The environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of Cylindrocarpon liriodendri include waterlogged soils, poor drainage, and low temperatures, which often occur during the early spring or late autumn. Once the fungus invades the root system, it colonizes the xylem and phloem, disrupting the water and nutrient uptake of the host plant.

Managing this pathogen requires an integrated strategy, as no single chemical control is completely effective once the plant is systemically infected. Growers should focus on prevention and cultural practices:

  • Sourcing certified, disease-free propagation material.
  • Implementing proper site selection to avoid poorly drained soils.
  • Treating nursery stock with hot water treatment where applicable.
  • Sanitizing pruning tools and equipment to prevent cross-contamination between plots.
