Description

Cytospora kunzei (syn. Valsa kunzei) is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is the primary causal agent of Cytospora canker, a significant disease affecting various species of conifers, particularly those in the genus Picea (spruces).

The fungus typically invades the tree through wounds, sunscald, or frost damage on the bark. Once inside, Cytospora kunzei colonizes the phloem and cambium, creating localized necrotic lesions (cankers). As these cankers expand, they often girdle the branch or trunk, cutting off the flow of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to the death of distal parts.

The disease cycle involves the production of pycnidia, which are small, flask-shaped fruiting bodies formed beneath the bark. During periods of high humidity or rainfall, these structures release masses of spores in characteristic orange, tendril-like coils. These spores are disseminated by splashing rain, wind, and movement by animals or pruning tools.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. Trees stressed by drought, poor soil aeration, improper planting depths, or physical trauma are highly susceptible. The fungus exploits this weakened state, quickly colonizing the bark tissues and producing toxins that further facilitate the development of the canker.

The economic and aesthetic impact is severe, as the infection ruins the form of the tree and can lead to total mortality if the main trunk is girdled. Effective management strategies include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected branches during dry weather conditions.
  • Sterilizing pruning equipment with alcohol or bleach between cuts to prevent spread.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides as a preventative measure on young or valuable specimens.
  • Improving site conditions to reduce tree stress, including irrigation during dry seasons and mulching.
