Cytosporina is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, widely recognized in agronomy as a serious phytopathogen. These fungi are primary agents responsible for various types of canker and bark necrosis diseases, which significantly affect the health and productivity of woody plants in both professional orchards and private gardens.

The host range of Cytosporina primarily includes pome fruits such as apples and pears, as well as several stone fruit varieties. The fungus invades the host through bark wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the bark, causing the affected area to become necrotic, sunken, and often discolored, leading to limb dieback.

The biology and life cycle of the pathogen revolve around the formation of pycnidia, which act as reproductive structures under the bark surface. When moisture levels are sufficient, these pycnidia release large amounts of spores, which are then disseminated by rainfall, wind, or insect activity. This mechanism allows the fungus to spread rapidly throughout an orchard during periods of high humidity.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically temperature and humidity. Prolonged periods of cool, wet weather favor the germination and colonization of the fungus within the plant host. Trees that are already stressed due to drought, nutritional deficiencies, or poor management practices are significantly more susceptible to severe infections.

The economic impact of Cytosporina is characterized by yield losses, reduced tree vigor, and, in severe cases, the complete loss of mature trees. Control measures are essential for maintaining orchard health:

  • Strict sanitation involving the removal and destruction of infected wood.
  • Application of wound dressings and disinfectants immediately after pruning.
  • Preventive spraying programs using copper-based or systemic fungicides.
  • Implementation of balanced fertilization to enhance the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
