Dahlia mosaic

Dahlia mosaic virus (DMV) is a plant pathogen belonging to the genus Caulimovirus in the Caulimoviridae family. It is one of the most significant viral diseases affecting dahlias and related species within the Asteraceae family. The virus is systemic, meaning it colonizes the entire plant, including the tubers, making it impossible to cure once the plant is infected.

The primary symptoms of Dahlia mosaic include mottling or chlorotic patterns on the leaves, especially along the leaf veins, which often look like mosaic patches. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and shortened internodes. The overall vigor of the plant is reduced, leading to smaller, distorted, or significantly fewer flowers, which drastically impacts the aesthetic value of the crop.

The biological cycle of the virus is closely linked to its vectors, primarily aphids (such as Myzus persicae). Transmission is non-persistent, meaning aphids can acquire the virus after a very short feeding period on an infected plant and immediately transfer it to a healthy one. Additionally, mechanical transmission occurs through garden tools during routine operations like pruning or dividing tubers.

Environmental conditions that favor high aphid populations contribute significantly to the rapid spread of the virus. Because the virus is tuber-borne, it persists in the dormant tubers through the winter, leading to the emergence of infected plants in the following growing season. Once introduced to a tuber, the virus remains within the plant's vascular system permanently.

Control strategies for Dahlia mosaic are focused on prevention and hygiene, as there is no chemical cure for the virus itself. Growers should use the following practices:

• Rogue out and destroy any plants showing mosaic symptoms immediately.
• Implement rigorous aphid control programs using suitable insecticides.
• Sterilize all cutting tools between plants using a bleach or alcohol solution.
• Source planting material only from reputable, virus-tested suppliers.
