Dehydration, in an agronomic context, refers to the severe physiological stress caused by an imbalance between water supply and water loss in plants. While it is not a biotic pathogen, it acts as a primary abiotic stressor that leads to severe metabolic disruption, cessation of essential physiological processes, and eventual plant tissue necrosis.

This condition affects a vast range of crops, such as cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Typical symptoms include the loss of turgor, wilting of leaves, drooping of stems, and chlorosis or marginal leaf burn. If left unmanaged, the plant's vascular system can fail, leading to permanent wilting and significant reductions in total biomass.

The biology of the condition involves the rate of transpiration exceeding the water uptake capacity of the root system. As moisture levels drop within the plant cells, the internal osmotic pressure becomes insufficient to maintain structural integrity. This cycle of stress starts with temporary daytime wilting and progresses to permanent physiological damage when critical hydration thresholds are crossed.

Environmental conditions that favor dehydration include extreme heat, prolonged drought, low relative humidity, and high soil salinity. The damage potential is high, often resulting in complete yield failure during critical growth stages like anthesis or grain filling. The impact is compounded in regions with poor soil water retention capabilities and insufficient irrigation infrastructure.

Control and management strategies include:

  • Implementation of advanced irrigation systems such as drip or precision watering.
  • Application of mulch to suppress soil evaporation and regulate temperature.
  • Use of antitranspirants to coat leaves and reduce moisture loss through stomata.
  • Selection of drought-tolerant genotypes that perform well in water-stressed environments.
  • Optimization of tillage practices to conserve soil moisture and improve water infiltration.
