Dematium

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. The genus Dematium belongs to the group of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycota), characterized by a dark-pigmented mycelium containing melanin. In modern phytopathology, this genus is often categorized among "black yeasts" or dark-colored hyphomycetes that act both as saprotrophs and facultative parasites in various environments.

Diseases and host crops. Dematium serves as a causative agent for various types of molds and leaf spots. It affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetables, and fruit plants. It most frequently appears as surface blackening of seeds, leaves, or fruit, which significantly diminishes the marketability and biological value of the harvest.

Biology and life cycle. The fungus spreads via conidia, which are dispersed by wind, raindrops, or insect pests. Asexual reproduction predominates in its life cycle. The pathogen’s mycelium shows high survival rates in the soil and on plant debris, allowing it to maintain its infectious potential for extended periods even under adverse environmental conditions.

Conditions for development and harmfulness. Optimal conditions for the fungus's active growth include high humidity and moderate temperatures. Harmfulness is manifested through the destruction of plant tissues, leading to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic activity of the foliage, and spoilage of fruits during storage. Severe infections can cause seedling mortality and significant yield losses.

Protection and control measures. Key control methods focus on preventing spore dispersal and creating conditions unfavorable for fungal proliferation:

• Implementation of proper crop rotation and deep incorporation of plant debris.
• Use of high-quality, treated seed material.
• Optimization of planting density to improve air circulation.
• Application of systemic fungicides at the first sign of disease symptoms.
