White root rot

Dematophora necatrix

Description

White root rot, caused by the fungus Dematophora necatrix (teleomorph: Rosellinia necatrix), is a devastating soil-borne disease affecting a vast range of woody and herbaceous plants. As a member of the Ascomycota division, this pathogen is notorious for its ability to persist in the soil for extended periods, making it one of the most challenging diseases for orchard and vineyard management.

The fungus impacts a diverse array of hosts, including pome fruits, stone fruits, citrus, vines, and several ornamental species. The infection usually starts in the fine root system, gradually spreading to the main structural roots and the crown. One of the most distinct diagnostic features is the development of a thick, white, cottony mycelial mat covering the diseased root surfaces.

In terms of biology and life cycle, the pathogen spreads through contaminated soil, irrigation water, and infected nursery stock. It forms rhizomorphs, which are specialized fungal structures that facilitate its movement through the soil. The fungus functions primarily as a necrotroph, secreting enzymes that degrade plant tissues, which leads to the collapse of the host's vascular system.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease severity; specifically, heavy, waterlogged soils with poor drainage and moderate temperatures provide an ideal environment for the proliferation of Dematophora necatrix. Symptoms are often subtle at first, manifesting as stunted growth and leaf chlorosis, but progress rapidly to complete wilting and tree death once the root system is critically damaged.

Control strategies for this pathogen are inherently difficult due to its persistence in the soil. Effective management requires an integrated approach: using certified disease-free nursery stock, improving field drainage to prevent waterlogging, and practicing rigorous sanitation. Chemical control with targeted soil fungicides or biological control agents like Trichoderma species can help mitigate the impact in infected areas, but preventive measures remain the most critical component of disease avoidance.
