Dendrophthora is a genus of mistletoes belonging to the Santalaceae family, acting as hemiparasitic plant pathogens. These organisms colonize woody plants, utilizing specialized structures known as haustoria to tap into the host's xylem and phloem to obtain essential water and mineral nutrients.
The taxonomic position of Dendrophthora places it within the order Santalales. As obligate parasites, they severely impact the host's vitality, leading to reduced growth, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stressors that can ultimately prove fatal to the tree.
The life cycle involves ornithochory, where birds feed on the sticky berries and disperse seeds onto host branches.
