Didymella is a genus of ascomycete fungi that acts as a significant plant pathogen affecting various agricultural crops. Taxonomically, this genus belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and the family Didymellaceae. The most notable species in agriculture is Didymella lycopersici, which is responsible for stem rot or didymella disease, causing substantial losses in greenhouse and field tomatoes.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include Solanaceous plants, especially tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The disease often manifests as dark, sunken lesions on the stems, typically near the soil level, which can girdle the stem and cause the plant to wilt and collapse. Foliar infections are also common, resulting in irregular brown spots that can drastically reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

The biology of Didymella involves surviving in soil, crop debris, and on contaminated seeds. The life cycle is characterized by the production of pycnidia containing conidia, which are disseminated by splashing water, rain, or human activities. The spores germinate and penetrate the host tissue, where the mycelium grows internally, disrupting vascular systems and causing structural decay.

Development and spread are favored by high humidity (often exceeding 80%) and moderate temperatures ranging between 18°C and 25°C. These conditions trigger the production of spores and their transmission across the canopy. Lack of adequate greenhouse ventilation and improper irrigation practices are key environmental triggers that lead to rapid disease outbreaks during the growing season.

The economic impact of Didymella is significant, leading to severe yield reductions and total loss of individual plants. Management strategies should be multifaceted to be successful. Key practices include:

  • Sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
  • Use of disease-free, certified seeds or transplants.
  • Ensuring proper spacing and airflow in greenhouses to reduce humidity.
  • Application of fungicides, such as copper-based products or systemic treatments, as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program.
