Description
Systematic position and pathogen type. Dilophospora holci is a fungal pathogen classified within the order Xylariales and the class Sordariomycetes. It is recognized primarily for its specialized symbiotic relationship with Anguina nematodes, which serve as vectors for the fungus, facilitating its entry into host plant tissues.
Diseases and host plants. This fungus is responsible for the disease known as twist or leaf spot of grasses. It affects various cereal crops, including wheat and rye, as well as a wide range of wild grass species (such as Holcus lanatus). The pathogen mainly colonizes the inflorescences, leaves, and stems of susceptible plants.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is uniquely intertwined with the life cycle of the seed-gall nematode. The conidia of the fungus attach to the surface of the nematode. When the nematode infects the developing flower head of the grain, it carries the fungal spores into the plant tissue, allowing the pathogen to thrive and form black stroma composed of mycelium and spores instead of healthy seeds.
Developmental conditions and damage. High humidity and moderate temperatures during the early stages of plant growth favor the development and spread of Dilophospora holci. The economic impact is manifested by significant yield losses, reduced grain quality, and the presence of fungal spores that can remain viable in the soil or crop debris for subsequent seasons.
Protection and control measures. Management strategies focus on strict phytosanitary practices, primarily the use of nematode-free, certified seed material. Effective rotation programs are essential to break the infection chain. Additionally, deep plowing to bury infested residues and rigorous weed control are critical steps in reducing the inoculum pressure in the field.
