The causal agent of strawberry leaf scorch is the fungus Diplocarpon earlianum. Classified within the phylum Ascomycota, this pathogen is a significant threat to strawberry plantations globally. The fungus completes its lifecycle through both sexual and asexual stages, allowing it to persist in the environment by overwintering on infected foliage and plant debris.

The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of dark purple or reddish-brown spots on the leaves. Unlike other spotting diseases, these lesions often coalesce, causing the leaf tissue to appear scorched or burned. The infection is not limited to leaves; it also affects petioles, runners, and fruit stalks, severely impacting the structural integrity and health of the plant.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically moisture and temperature. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures provide the perfect scenario for conidia dispersal. The fungus relies on water splashes to spread to healthy tissues, making seasons with excessive spring and summer rain particularly high-risk periods for rapid disease outbreaks.

The economic impact of Diplocarpon earlianum is significant due to the reduction in plant vitality. Premature leaf drop significantly restricts the photosynthetic capacity of the strawberry plant, leading to smaller fruit sizes and reduced sugar content. Furthermore, the resulting stress weakens the root system, which can severely compromise the plant's ability to survive the following winter.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Sanitation is the most critical factor: removing and destroying infected leaves after harvest is essential to reduce the primary inoculum load for the next season. Growers should also prioritize planting resistant cultivars where available and ensuring wide spacing between plants to maximize airflow, which keeps the leaf surface drier and less conducive to fungal growth.
