Description

Diplodia corticola is a serious fungal pathogen belonging to the Kingdom Fungi and the genus Diplodia. It is widely recognized as a primary agent in the "oak decline" syndrome, significantly impacting oak species across various regions. Besides its impact on forest trees, it is also known to cause canker diseases in other woody plants, including grapevines.

The disease primarily manifests as bark necrosis, where the infected tissue dies, leading to the formation of sunken cankers and deep longitudinal cracks in the stem and branches. In many cases, dark fluid exudates can be observed leaking from these lesions. As the pathogen spreads through the vascular system, it inhibits water and nutrient flow, leading to crown thinning and eventually the death of the entire tree.

The biology of the pathogen involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. It produces spores (conidia) that are released during humid conditions, spreading via rain splash, wind currents, and insect vectors. The fungus often exists as an endophyte, remaining latent within the tree until the host is stressed, at which point it transitions into an aggressive parasitic phase.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. Drought stress, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical injuries provide the perfect entry points for the fungus to colonize the host tissues. Increased atmospheric moisture and mild temperatures facilitate the rapid germination of spores and the subsequent infection of previously healthy plant parts.

Management of Diplodia corticola requires a proactive strategy to minimize the spread and impact on vulnerable stands. The most effective methods are:

  • Regular forest health surveys to detect early signs of bark necrosis.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce the local inoculum pool.
  • Mitigation of environmental stresses through proper site selection and forest stand management.
  • Strict quarantine regulations regarding the movement of nursery stock to prevent further geographic spread.
