It is a parasitic fungus that relies on the host's foliar tissues to complete its biological development cycle.

The characteristic symptoms of this disease include the formation of small, black, cushion-like stromata on the leaves. These structures are typically visible on both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf. As the infection progresses, the area around the fungal stroma may develop chlorotic yellow halos, eventually leading to premature senescence and leaf drop. This foliage loss significantly weakens the host tree, reducing its vigor and aesthetic value.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to the host's seasonal cycles. The fungus overwinters in the stroma stage on fallen elm leaves.
