Description
Drechslera oryzae, previously known as Bipolaris oryzae, is a filamentous fungus within the kingdom Fungi and the genus Drechslera. This pathogen is the primary cause of brown spot disease in rice crops, which is considered one of the most economically significant fungal diseases affecting rice production globally.
The disease affects all parts of the rice plant, including leaves, sheaths, stems, and panicles. Symptoms typically present as small, circular-to-oval spots with dark brown margins and gray or light yellow centers. In severe cases, the lesions coalesce, resulting in widespread necrosis of the leaves, which significantly impacts the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and reduces grain weight.
The life cycle of the pathogen begins with mycelia and conidia surviving in crop debris, weed hosts, or infested seeds. Under favorable environmental conditions, these conidia are disseminated via wind, rain splashes, or irrigation water to healthy plants. Once on the host, the conidia germinate, and the fungal hyphae invade the plant tissue to establish infection.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development and spread of Drechslera oryzae. High humidity levels, ideally above 90%, coupled with warm temperatures ranging between 25°C and 30°C, are optimal for disease progression. Furthermore, soil nutrient imbalances, particularly the deficiency of essential elements like potassium, make rice plants highly susceptible to the pathogen.
Effective management and control of brown spot require a multifaceted approach.
- Utilization of resistant or tolerant rice varieties.
- Seed treatment with appropriate fungicides to eliminate seed-borne inoculum.
- Balanced application of fertilizers to prevent plant stress.
