Eggplant mottle virus (EMoV) is a viral plant pathogen classified within the Comovirus genus of the Secoviridae family. It primarily infects Solanaceous crops, including eggplants, tomatoes, and various pepper species. As a systemic pathogen, it disrupts host cellular metabolism, leading to significant physiological stress and reduced overall crop productivity.
The infection manifests through distinct symptoms such as mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, and leaf curling. In advanced stages, plants exhibit stunted growth and reduced vigor. The impact on fruit development is critical; infected plants produce smaller, malformed fruits with reduced shelf life, making the harvest unsuitable for commercial markets.
The biological cycle of the virus is characterized by its reliance on insect vectors, primarily beetles from the Chrysomelidae family, which transmit the pathogen while feeding on plant tissues. Mechanical transmission can also occur during routine agricultural practices such as pruning, thinning, or harvesting.
