Description

Endoconidiophora fimbriata (syn. Ceratocystis fimbriata) is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. It is well-documented in agricultural science as the primary cause of black rot in sweet potatoes, as well as being responsible for serious vascular wilt and canker diseases in various woody species, including cacao, coffee, and fruit trees, causing significant economic losses globally.

The disease symptoms typically manifest as dark, depressed lesions on the plant tissues. On tubers or roots, these spots eventually lead to a dry rot that can destroy the entire structure. In trees, the pathogen infects the vascular system, resulting in severe wilting, branch dieback, and eventual tree death if the trunk or root system is severely compromised.

The life cycle of E. fimbriata is complex, involving the production of endoconidia, ascospores, and highly resilient chlamydospores. These chlamydospores can persist in the soil for years, making the pathogen difficult to eradicate once a field is contaminated. Spores are primarily disseminated through contaminated soil, infested planting stock, agricultural machinery, and various insect vectors.

Environmental conditions such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures are critical for the rapid spread and infection process. Furthermore, the fungus exploits wounds caused by harvesting tools, insect feeding, or environmental stress, making any physical breach of the plant's natural defenses an entry point for the mycelium to initiate colonization.

Effective management and control measures include:

  • Using only certified disease-free propagation material to prevent field contamination.
  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols for tools and storage facilities to minimize cross-contamination.
  • Practicing long-term crop rotation to reduce the pathogen population density in the soil.
  • Treating seeds or cuttings with registered fungicides as a preventive measure.
  • Maintaining proper environmental controls (temperature and humidity) during harvest and storage to limit disease development.
