The fungus acts as a necrotrophic parasite, colonizing the bark, cambium, and sometimes the xylem of its host, leading to cell death and the formation of characteristic cankers.
The primary hosts for this fungus include various species of the genus Quercus (oaks), as well as Liquidambar styraciflua and other hardwood trees. The disease is characterized by the development of depressed, discolored, or cracked bark areas. As the cankers enlarge, they can girdle stems or branches, interrupting the nutrient and water flow, which often leads to the crown dieback of the infected tree.
