This pathogen is widely recognized in forestry and phytopathology for its ability to cause serious necrotic damage to the bark and stems of various woody species.
The host range of Endothiella gyrosa primarily includes trees from the Fagaceae family, with a significant impact on chestnuts (Castanea) and oaks (Quercus). The disease manifests as sunken lesions or cankers on the bark, which eventually girdle the stem or branches, leading to a disruption of the vascular system and the death of the distal parts of the tree.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production of conidia within pycnidia. These spores are disseminated via wind, rain splash, and insect vectors, facilitating the spread of the fungus across plantations.
