Description

Enterobacter cloacae is a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium within the Enterobacteriaceae family. While often recognized in medical microbiology, it is also a significant phytopathogen capable of causing serious damage to various agricultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, and field crops.

This pathogen is primarily known for causing soft rots, leading to the tissue degradation of tubers, fruits, and stems. The infection process involves the secretion of extracellular enzymes, such as pectinases and cellulases, which break down the plant cell wall, resulting in the characteristic maceration and liquefaction of infected tissues.

The life cycle of Enterobacter cloacae involves survival in soil, decaying organic matter, and irrigation water. The bacteria can persist as epiphytes on plant surfaces or colonize the vascular system. Dissemination occurs through splashing rain, agricultural equipment, and contaminated planting material, making it a difficult pathogen to eradicate once it establishes in a field environment.

Infection thrives under conditions of high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. The presence of wounds — caused by insects, nematodes, or mechanical handling — is critical for the bacterium to penetrate host tissues effectively. Once inside, the pathogen multiplies rapidly, particularly in succulent plant parts with high water content.

Managing the spread of Enterobacter cloacae requires an integrated pest management approach:

  • Sanitation protocols to reduce the primary inoculum in fields and storage facilities.
  • Effective crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Control of vectors (insects) that create entry points for the bacteria.
  • Proper post-harvest management, including curing and maintaining optimal storage conditions.
  • Application of preventative copper-based treatments or biological control agents.
