Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Eremothecium gossypii belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Ascomycota. It is a highly specialized plant pathogen widely recognized in agronomy as a major cause of economic loss in fiber crops. Beyond its role as a parasite, this fungus has gained industrial importance as a significant producer of riboflavin (vitamin B2) in fermentation biotechnology.
Diseases and host crops: The primary host for this pathogen is cotton (Gossypium species). It causes a condition commonly known as internal boll rot or "stain," where the fungal development inside the boll causes the lint to discolor, deteriorate, and lose its economic value. While primarily affecting cotton, the fungus can occasionally infect other members of the Malvaceae family under favorable environmental conditions.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Eremothecium gossypii is closely associated with insect vectors, particularly mirid bugs. These insects feed on the cotton plant by piercing the wall of the developing boll. As they feed, they inadvertently introduce the fungal spores into the interior of the boll. Once inside, the fungus exploits the nutrient-rich environment of the developing seeds and lint, rapidly colonizing the tissue.
Conditions for development and damage: The fungus thrives in warm, humid conditions, which are also often ideal for the insect vectors. The damage is twofold: it physically destroys the fiber quality, making it brittle and stained, and it often leads to the complete abortion of the boll or significant reduction in seed germination rates. Economic losses in endemic areas can be devastating if insect populations are not properly managed.
Protection and control measures: Effective management relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on minimizing the insect vector activity:
- Application of targeted insecticides during the boll-filling stage to control mirid bug populations.
- Utilization of cotton varieties with thicker boll walls or physiological traits that discourage insect feeding.
- Sanitation practices that involve the removal and destruction of crop residues where the pathogen or vectors might harbor.
- Monitoring of neighboring wild host plants that may serve as reservoirs for both the fungus and the insects.
