Description

Eremothecium gossypii is a filamentous ascomycete fungus and a well-known plant pathogen. It is primarily recognized as the causal agent of internal boll rot in cotton, a condition that severely compromises both yield and fiber quality. This fungus is also studied extensively in biotechnology as a model organism for vitamin production, but in an agricultural context, it remains a significant threat to crop health.

The fungus mainly affects the developing reproductive structures of the cotton plant. Once the pathogen enters the cotton boll, it colonizes the developing seeds and lint. The infection leads to a distinct discoloration and degradation of the fiber, turning it yellowish or brownish and making it weak and brittle. Furthermore, infected seeds often fail to germinate, causing significant losses for cotton producers.

The life cycle of E. gossypii is heavily dependent on insect vectors, particularly hemipteran bugs. When these insects feed on the boll by puncturing the outer wall, they inadvertently introduce the fungal spores into the sterile environment of the boll's interior. This mechanical damage serves as a portal of entry for the fungus, after which it spreads rapidly through the maturing tissues.

Conditions that favor the development of the pathogen include warm temperatures and high humidity, which accelerate the fungal growth process once the boll has been compromised. The prevalence of the disease is strictly linked to the population dynamics of the insect vectors. Therefore, regions with high insect pressure are at the greatest risk of experiencing widespread infections within their cotton fields.

Effective management strategies against Eremothecium gossypii focus on integrated pest management (IPM). The most critical component is the control of the insect vectors using targeted insecticides. Additionally, crop hygiene is essential; removing crop residues and avoiding continuous cropping of cotton in the same fields helps to reduce the primary inoculum levels. Breeding for host resistance is also a long-term goal to mitigate the impact of this pathogen.
