Description

The tulip bulb mite (Eriophyes tulipae) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. It is a significant plant pathogen known for its ability to damage various bulbous plants, specifically acting as a vector for viruses, including the Tulip breaking virus, which causes color-breaking in flowers.

This mite species primarily affects plants within the Liliaceae family. Tulip crops are the most frequent hosts, but the pest also infests lilies, hyacinths, and other bulbous species. Its feeding habits lead to stunted growth, leaf deformation, and, in severe cases, the complete necrosis of the bulb tissues.

The life cycle of the tulip bulb mite is highly adaptable to the storage conditions of the host bulbs. In warm and humid environments, the population can grow rapidly, as the mites hide between the bulb scales. They survive the off-season within the stored bulbs, making them a persistent threat to commercial nurseries.

The development of the infestation is directly correlated with storage management. Poor ventilation, high humidity, and temperatures above 15°C promote rapid multiplication of the mite. Once the bulbs are planted, the mites move from the scales to the emerging leaves and buds, continuing their cycle on the green parts of the plant.

Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include storing bulbs at cooler temperatures, ensuring adequate air circulation, and strictly discarding any bulbs showing signs of softening or damage. Chemical control involves dipping the bulbs in specific acaricidal solutions before planting to eradicate the hidden population.
