Erysiphe is a genus of obligate biotrophic fungi belonging to the Erysiphaceae family. As a significant plant pathogen, it acts as the causal agent of powdery mildew, one of the most widespread fungal diseases affecting both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants worldwide. The fungus feeds by inserting haustoria into the epidermal cells of the host, extracting essential nutrients and carbon sources.
The host range of Erysiphe is extensive, encompassing major crops such as wheat, barley, various vegetables, grapes, and many ornamental species. Symptoms typically appear as white to greyish mycelial mats on the leaf surface, stems, and sometimes floral parts. As the disease progresses, these patches can cover the entire leaf surface, leading to severe chlorosis and senescence.
The life cycle of Erysiphe involves a repeating asexual cycle during the growing season, where conidia are produced and dispersed by wind. As conditions deteriorate or as the season nears its end, the fungus forms sexual structures known as cleistothecia. These dark, fruiting bodies serve as the primary overwintering stage, allowing the pathogen to persist in crop debris until the next favorable growing season.
Optimal environmental conditions for the spread of Erysiphe include warm temperatures and high humidity, though rainfall is not strictly necessary for spore germination. The absence of a requirement for surface water distinguishes powdery mildew from many other fungal leaf diseases, allowing it to propagate efficiently even in drier climates when air humidity is sufficient.
Effective management and control measures for Erysiphe include:
- Selecting and planting resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
- Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Managing field residues through deep plowing or burning.
- Applying preventive or curative fungicides, such as triazoles, strobilurins, or sulfur-based compounds.
