Erysiphe azaleae is a specialized fungal pathogen categorized under the phylum Ascomycota and the order Erysiphales. It is the primary causal agent of powdery mildew disease, specifically targeting plants within the genus Rhododendron, which includes various species of azaleas known for their susceptibility to this infection.
The infection is easily identifiable by the presence of a white, felt-like mycelial growth that appears on the leaf surfaces, petioles, and shoots. As the fungus colonizes the host, it causes yellowing, chlorosis, and potential necrosis of the leaves, which severely impacts the plant's aesthetic value and overall physiological health.
The life cycle of the pathogen is characterized by both asexual and sexual stages. Asexual conidia are produced in chains and dispersed by wind to colonize healthy plant tissues. During the dormant season, the fungus persists as chasmothecia (cleistothecia), which are sexual reproductive structures that allow the pathogen to survive in organic debris until the next growing season.

Poor air circulation caused by overcrowding or lack of pruning, as well as shady conditions with limited sunlight exposure, significantly increase the risk and severity of the disease outbreak.
