Powdery mildew of crucifers

Erysiphe cruciferarum

Description

Systematic position and type of pathogen: Erysiphe cruciferarum is a fungal pathogen classified under the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and order Erysiphales. It is an obligate biotrophic parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle and survives by extracting nutrients via haustoria that penetrate the plant cell wall.

Diseases and host crops: This fungus causes powdery mildew, a common and destructive foliar disease. Its primary host range consists of Brassicaceae family members, including various cabbage cultivars (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts), rapeseed (canola), mustard, radish, and arugula.

Biology and life cycle: The pathogen is characterized by a white, flour-like mycelial growth covering the surfaces of leaves, stems, and sometimes pods. It reproduces via asexual conidia that are wind-dispersed to neighboring plants. During the off-season, the fungus survives as chasmothecia (sexual structures) on crop debris or as dormant mycelium on wintering weeds or volunteer plants.

Conditions for development and spread: Erysiphe cruciferarum thrives in warm, dry weather conditions, typically between 15°C and 25°C. Unlike many other fungal diseases, it does not require free water on the leaf surface for germination; however, high relative humidity promotes rapid colony expansion and sporulation across the crop canopy.

Harmfulness and control measures: Heavy infections lead to yellowing, necrosis, and premature leaf drop, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and reduces yields in oilseed or vegetable production. Effective management strategies include:

  • Implementing crop rotation cycles to break the pathogen's survival chain.
  • Removing cruciferous weeds and infected crop residues from the field.
  • Selecting resistant varieties where available.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides, such as sulfur-based products or systemic triazoles, during the early stages of symptom appearance.
