Description

The causal agent of powdery mildew of cereals, Erysiphe graminis (synonym Blumeria graminis), is an obligate biotrophic fungus within the phylum Ascomycota. It is a highly specialized pathogen that exclusively infects members of the Poaceae family, primarily wheat, barley, rye, and oats.

The primary symptom of the disease is the development of a white, felt-like mycelial growth on the upper surface of leaves, stems, and heads. As the infection progresses, the white patches become denser and develop characteristic black, pinpoint-sized structures known as cleistothecia, which are essential for the fungus's survival through unfavorable seasons.

The life cycle of the pathogen relies on wind-dispersed conidia for secondary spread during the growing season. Under optimal conditions, including temperatures between 15°C and 20°C and high relative humidity, the pathogen can complete its infection cycle in less than a week, allowing for rapid disease development and massive spread across the crop.

High-density planting and excessive nitrogen fertilization create a favorable microclimate for the development of powdery mildew. The fungus survives primarily as dormant mycelium or cleistothecia on infected crop residues and volunteer plants, serving as a primary source of inoculum for the next crop season.

The economic impact of Erysiphe graminis is severe, as the pathogen impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity, causing leaf chlorosis and premature senescence. This results in reduced tiller numbers, smaller grain size, and a significant decrease in overall yield quality and quantity, often leading to yield losses of up to 30% in susceptible cultivars.
