Description

Erysiphe vaccinii is an obligate parasitic fungus belonging to the Erysiphales order. It is a specialized pathogen primarily affecting plants in the Ericaceae family, most notably those within the Vaccinium genus, including blueberries, cranberries, and lingonberries. The fungus remains on the surface of plant tissues, using specialized structures called haustoria to penetrate the epidermis and siphon nutrients from the host plant.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of a distinctive white, dusty coating on leaves, shoots, and sometimes fruits. As the infection progresses, this mycelial growth spreads, leading to leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence. In severe cases, the vitality of the plant is significantly compromised, resulting in reduced fruit set and poor quality yields that lack marketability.

The life cycle of Erysiphe vaccinii involves the production of vast quantities of wind-dispersed conidia throughout the growing season, which facilitate rapid spread across agricultural fields. As temperatures drop and autumn approaches, the fungus develops cleistothecia, which are dark, overwintering fruiting bodies. These structures allow the pathogen to survive the winter on fallen leaves and woody debris, ensuring survival and reinfection in the following spring.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the outbreak of powdery mildew. High relative humidity combined with warm temperatures creates an ideal environment for conidial germination and colonization. Furthermore, poor airflow due to overcrowded planting densities and excessive nitrogen fertilization, which promotes lush, tender vegetative growth, significantly increases the susceptibility of berry crops to this pathogen.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management strategy focusing on both sanitation and chemical intervention. Key practices include:

  • Pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
  • Sanitation measures, including the removal and destruction of infected plant material.
  • Application of fungicides, such as sulfur-based products, triazoles, or strobilurins, during periods of high disease pressure.
  • Monitoring field conditions to apply treatments precisely when conditions are favorable for infection.
Proper disease management is essential to prevent significant economic losses in commercial blueberry and cranberry cultivation.
