Description

Hop stunt viroid (HSVd) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Pospiviroidae family and the Hostuviroid genus. It consists of a single-stranded circular RNA molecule that lacks a protein capsid. Despite its small size, it is a highly infectious agent that causes stunting and various physiological disorders in a wide range of economically important crops, such as hops, citrus, grapes, and cucumbers.

The pathogenicity of HSVd is characterized by profound changes in host plant development. Infected plants exhibit severe growth retardation, reduced internode length, leaf deformation, and significantly diminished yields. In citrus, it causes a disease known as cachexia, manifesting as wood necrosis, which can eventually lead to the death of the tree if left unmanaged, posing a major threat to commercial fruit production.

Regarding its biology, the viroid relies on the host's cellular machinery for replication. Once inside the plant, it systematically spreads through the phloem. It is highly stable and can be transmitted mechanically through contaminated tools during pruning, grafting, and other agricultural activities. It does not require a biological vector like an insect for transmission, making mechanical contact the primary driver of spread in orchards and hop yards.

Development and dissemination are favored by optimal growing conditions that promote active plant growth. The pathogen thrives in moderate to warm temperatures, which are also ideal for its replication. Because the viroid can persist in dormant tissue and infected debris for extended periods, even slight negligence in sanitation practices during the dormant season can lead to widespread outbreaks during the following growing cycle.

Management strategies focus solely on prevention and exclusion, as there are no chemical agents capable of curing an infected plant. Strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols is essential. Effective measures include:

  • Sourcing certified pathogen-free propagation material from reputable nurseries.
  • Stringent sterilization of pruning shears, knives, and harvesting equipment using bleach or specialized disinfectants.
  • Implementation of regular diagnostic testing (e.g., RT-PCR) to detect latent infections.
  • Immediate eradication and safe disposal of all infected plant material from the field.
