Eutypa dieback

Eutypa (genus Eutypa) represents a group of ascomycetous fungi, with Eutypa lata being the most significant species affecting agriculture. As a serious phytopathogen within the Kingdom Fungi, it causes chronic wood decay in various woody perennial plants, primarily targeting the vascular system and internal wood structure of the host.

The primary host of economic importance is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera), although the fungus is known to affect a wide range of hosts including apricot, almond, and cherry trees. In viticulture, the disease is commonly referred to as Eutypa dieback, characterized by stunted shoot growth, chlorotic leaves, and eventually the death of entire cordons or trunks.

The life cycle involves the production of perithecia on dead or dying wood. These fruiting bodies release ascospores, which are dispersed by wind and rain. Infection typically occurs through fresh pruning wounds or large mechanical injuries where the pathogen can colonize the exposed xylem tissue, leading to deep wood necrosis and internal staining.

Environmental conditions conducive to spore release and infection include wet, cool weather following dormant season pruning. Because the pathogen colonizes the internal wood, the disease is progressive and long-term. Infected vines may not show symptoms for several years after the initial infection, which makes it a persistent threat in established vineyards.

• Monitor vineyards for stunted, chlorotic shoots during early spring.
• Perform pruning during dry weather to reduce infection risk.
• Apply protective fungicides or wound sealants immediately after pruning.
• Remove and burn all infected wood to reduce the local inoculum source.
• Disinfect pruning tools regularly to prevent cross-contamination.

Effective management is strictly preventative, as there is no chemical cure for systemic wood infections. Cultural practices, such as prioritizing the removal of symptomatic wood and implementing strict hygiene protocols during pruning, remain the cornerstone of controlling Eutypa dieback and maintaining vineyard longevity.
