Description

Exobasidium splendidum is a specialized fungal plant pathogen belonging to the Basidiomycota division and the Exobasidiaceae family. It is recognized as an obligate parasite, primarily affecting woody ornamental plants, with a distinct preference for various species and hybrids within the genus Rhododendron.

The fungus is responsible for causing a characteristic condition known as gall disease or leaf hypertrophy. Infected leaves exhibit localized thickening and swelling, often turning pale green, yellow, or deep red. As the disease progresses, the leaf surfaces become covered with a white, powdery bloom, which consists of the fungus's basidia and spores, signifying the production stage of the pathogen's lifecycle.

The biological cycle of Exobasidium splendidum is highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. During the spring growth flush, spores are disseminated by wind or splashing water onto new, susceptible foliage. The mycelium penetrates the leaf tissue, triggering an hormonal response that causes the characteristic cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia, ultimately forming the galls.

Outbreaks of this pathogen are most frequent in areas with cool, wet spring weather and poor air circulation around the plants. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as dormant mycelium within the buds or tissues of the host plant. This internal persistence makes the pathogen difficult to eliminate, as it can remain latent for extended periods before symptomatic growth appears.

To minimize damage and control the spread of Exobasidium splendidum, integrated pest management strategies must be employed. Practical measures for gardeners and nursery managers include:

  • Careful pruning and removal of all visibly galled leaves and shoots to reduce the source of inoculum.
  • Improving site hygiene and promoting adequate spacing between plants to enhance airflow and leaf drying.
  • Applying preventative copper-based fungicide sprays before bud break and shortly after flowering.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation that keeps the foliage wet for prolonged periods, especially in humid conditions.
