Description

Botrytis fabae is a destructive fungal pathogen primarily responsible for chocolate spot disease in faba beans (Vicia faba). Taxonomically, it belongs to the phylum Ascomycota and the genus Botrytis. This pathogen is highly specialized to leguminous plants, acting as a necrotrophic parasite that induces tissue necrosis by secreting toxins and cell-wall-degrading enzymes.

The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of small, reddish-brown spots on leaves, which give the disease its common name, chocolate spot. Under high humidity, these spots enlarge rapidly, covering stems and flowers, and eventually produce a greyish, fuzzy mass of mycelium and conidia. Severe infections often lead to premature leaf abscission, stunted plant growth, and a significant reduction in grain yield.

The life cycle of Botrytis fabae is characterized by the production of conidia that serve as the primary inoculum for secondary spread. The fungus survives the winter period in the form of sclerotia within the soil or as mycelium on crop debris and infected seeds. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and insects to healthy plant tissues, where they germinate and initiate new infection sites.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of this pathogen. Botrytis fabae thrives in cool and humid environments, with optimal temperatures ranging between 15°C and 22°C. Prolonged periods of rainfall during the flowering stage create an environment conducive to explosive disease development, as the high humidity levels facilitate both the dispersal of spores and the infection process of the host plant.

To effectively manage the disease, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies must be employed. These include the use of disease-free certified seeds, implementation of long-term crop rotation, and deep soil tillage to bury infected plant residues. In regions prone to high disease pressure, the strategic application of fungicides is essential. Selecting resistant cultivars is considered the most sustainable long-term solution for reducing yield losses caused by Botrytis fabae.
