Description

The causal agent of chocolate spot is the fungus Botrytis fabae, which belongs to the kingdom Fungi, genus Botrytis. It is a highly specialized pathogen that primarily targets faba beans (Vicia faba). This disease represents a significant constraint to pulse production globally, especially in cool and humid regions.

The infection begins with small, circular, reddish-brown spots on leaves, which can expand and coalesce to cover large areas of the plant tissue. Under high humidity, these necrotic lesions produce a fuzzy grey layer of fungal spores. If left uncontrolled, the disease can lead to extensive defoliation and flower drop.

The life cycle of Botrytis fabae involves survival in the soil through sclerotia or as mycelium on crop debris. The primary inoculum is wind-dispersed or rain-splashed conidia. Once they land on a susceptible host, they penetrate the surface, initiating a cycle of infection that can rapidly spread throughout the field.

Development is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels. The pathogen thrives during prolonged rainy periods and cool-to-moderate temperatures. Dense crop canopies, which retain moisture and reduce airflow, provide an optimal microclimate for the rapid multiplication of the fungus.

The economic impact of chocolate spot is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses and reduced grain quality. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach, including the use of disease-resistant cultivars, proper crop rotation practices, managing plant density to improve air circulation, and the judicious application of registered fungicides during critical growth stages.
