Description
Fasciation is a condition of abnormal growth in vascular plants, characterized by the flattening, broadening, and often branching of stems, flowers, or fruits. This growth anomaly occurs when the apical meristem, which usually produces cylindrical growth, becomes elongated perpendicular to the direction of growth, resulting in a ribbon-like or crested appearance.
From a phytopathological perspective, fasciation can be a symptom caused by biological agents, specifically phytoplasmas (obligate intracellular bacteria). These pathogens colonize the phloem tissue of the plant and are typically transmitted by phloem-feeding insects, such as leafhoppers, during their feeding process on host plants.
Fasciation affects a wide range of botanical species, including horticultural crops like tomatoes, strawberries, and asparagus, as well as ornamental plants. In tomatoes, for example, the phenomenon often results in catfacing or extreme malformation of the fruit, rendering them commercially unviable. The severity of the deformation depends on the timing of the disruption within the plant's life cycle.
Environmental triggers for non-genetic fasciation include physical damage to the plant meristem, frost, viral or phytoplasmal infections, and heavy infestations of sucking insects. In terms of distribution, these conditions spread rapidly in fields where insect vectors have high populations and where environmental conditions promote the rapid development and movement of these vectors.
Managing fasciation, particularly when it stems from phytoplasmal infection, requires a comprehensive approach focused on vector control and sanitation:
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control leafhoppers, aphids, and other sucking insects.
- Removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the inoculum source.
- Elimination of weed hosts in and around the field that may harbor the pathogen.
- Use of healthy, pathogen-free propagation material and seeds.
- Application of protective nets or barriers in sensitive high-value greenhouse crops.
