It is a perennial basidiomycete that specifically targets coniferous trees, acting as an aggressive parasite that causes significant internal wood decay in standing timber.
This pathogen is primarily responsible for inducing brown heart rot within the stems of mature conifers, including Larix, Pinus, and Picea species. The fungus secretes enzymes that break down cellulose and hemicellulose while leaving the lignin intact, leading to a brittle, cubical rot pattern that severely compromises the structural integrity of the host tree.
The life cycle involves the formation of woody, perennial fruiting bodies, which appear as shelf-like or hoof-shaped structures on the trunks of infected trees.
