Fruit injury is a collective term in agriculture used to describe non-infectious damages caused by abiotic factors, mechanical stress, or physiological disorders. While not caused by a single pathogen, these injuries serve as primary entry points for secondary fungi and bacteria, leading to significant post-harvest losses and reduced market value.

Regarding systematic status, this term refers to physiological processes rather than a biological organism. It encompasses a range of disorders like sunscald, blossom-end rot, fruit cracking, and cold-induced damage. These phenomena occur when plants are unable to adapt to sudden environmental stressors, leading to cell collapse and tissue degradation.

The biology and development of such injuries are linked to the water balance and mineral nutrition of the plant. For instance, irregular water supply causes excessive turgor pressure, leading to skin rupture. Once the physical barrier of the fruit skin is broken, internal sugars are exposed, attracting opportunistic pests and pathogens that rapidly colonize the wounded tissue.

Development and spread are favored by extreme weather conditions such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall following drought, or hail storms. These factors create an environment where the plant’s physiological mechanisms are overwhelmed. The severity of the injury depends on the growth stage, with rapid expansion phases being the most vulnerable to physiological cracking.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Optimizing irrigation systems to ensure consistent soil moisture levels.
  • Foliar calcium applications to reinforce cell wall structural integrity.
  • Deployment of shade cloths to protect crops from intense solar radiation.
  • Proper pest management to prevent bite wounds that initiate decay.
  • Implementing careful harvest and handling techniques to avoid bruising.
