Description

Monilia fruit rot is caused by fungi of the Monilia genus, which are devastating phytopathogens belonging to the Ascomycota class. This disease represents a major threat to global fruit production, manifesting as blossom blight, twig blight, and the characteristic brown rot that destroys ripening fruit.

The pathogen primarily affects pome and stone fruits, including apples, pears, cherries, peaches, and plums. Early symptoms appear in spring when flowers wither and turn brown due to the primary infection. Later in the season, the fungus attacks the fruit, causing soft, brown decaying spots that eventually develop greyish or buff-colored pustules containing fungal spores.

The biology of Monilia is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Infection peaks during cool, wet weather, especially when persistent fog or rain coincides with the flowering stage. The fungus overwinters as mycelium within infected twigs and mummified fruits left hanging on the tree or fallen on the ground, serving as a primary source of inoculum for the next season.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it can cause complete loss of harvest in a short period. Beyond the direct destruction of fruit, the disease can lead to the death of branches and overall tree decline, making the management of infected orchards labor-intensive and costly for farmers and gardeners alike.

Effective control requires an integrated approach to break the disease cycle. Recommended practices include:

  • Sanitation: removing all mummified fruits and pruning affected branches.
  • Improving orchard hygiene to reduce the overwintering inoculum.
  • Application of protective fungicides during the blossom and fruit-set stages.
  • Maintaining proper tree spacing and pruning to improve air circulation within the canopy.
  • Monitoring weather patterns to time chemical applications for maximum efficiency.
