Taxonomic position and pathogen nature: Fusarium boothii belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Fusarium. It is a filamentous fungus that is part of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC). As a highly aggressive plant pathogen, it poses a significant threat to global cereal production by colonizing vascular tissues and producing harmful secondary metabolites.
Diseases and host plants: The fungus primarily infects cereals such as wheat, barley, oats, and maize. It is a major cause of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) in small grains and Fusarium Ear Rot in maize. The infection manifests as visible fungal mycelium, which can be white to salmon-pink, leading to shriveled grains, reduced seed germination, and overall poor crop quality.
Biology and lifecycle: The pathogen survives the winter in crop debris, such as stubble or soil, in the form of mycelium, chlamydospores, or perithecia. During the growing season, spores (conidia or ascospores) are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insects. The most critical period for infection is flowering (anthesis), where the fungus colonizes the open florets and proceeds to invade the developing kernels.
Environmental conditions and impact: Fusarium boothii thrives in warm, humid climates with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C and high relative humidity. Its impact is twofold: it causes direct yield losses by disrupting grain filling and reduces grain quality through the contamination of mycotoxins, specifically deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone, which pose severe health risks to humans and livestock.
Protection and control measures: Managing this pathogen requires an integrated agricultural approach to minimize inoculum pressure:
- Implementation of diverse crop rotations to break the disease cycle;
- Deep tillage or intensive residue management to accelerate decomposition;
- Application of specialized fungicides during the flowering stage;
- Utilization of certified seeds treated with effective fungicides;
- Selection of resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
