It is a cosmopolitan soil-borne pathogen that poses a significant threat to global agriculture. It can survive in the soil for extended periods as chlamydospores, making it a persistent challenge for crop management.
The pathogen is responsible for various plant diseases, primarily root rots, vascular wilts, stem lesions, and fruit rots. It has a very broad host range, infecting major economic crops such as cereals, legumes, cucurbits, and various orchard trees. By colonizing the vascular system of the host, the fungus impairs nutrient and water uptake, eventually leading to plant death.
The biology of Fusarium haematococcum involves a complex cycle of asexual reproduction through conidia and survival through resistant chlamydospores. Infection typically occurs through root wounds or natural openings in the root cortex. Once inside, the fungus secretes mycotoxins and cell-wall degrading enzymes that facilitate its spread within plant tissues.
