It is a cosmopolitan plant pathogen known for its ability to survive as both a saprophyte on crop debris and as a destructive parasite on living plant tissues.
Affected crops and diseases: This fungus is the primary agent responsible for Fusarium ear rot in maize and the bakanae disease (foolish seedling disease) in rice, which causes elongated, chlorotic stems. It also induces root and stalk rots in sorghum and various vegetable crops, posing a significant risk to global food security.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen overwinters as mycelium, chlamydospores, or perithecia in soil, plant residues, and seeds. During the growing season, spores are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects. Infection typically starts through mechanical damage or natural openings like the silk of the corn ear during pollination, leading to systemic infection.
Environmental conditions: High humidity and warm temperatures (ranging from 25°C to 30°C) during the flowering stage create the ideal environment for infection.
