Artist's bracket

Ganoderma applanatum

Description

Systematic position: The Artist's bracket (Ganoderma applanatum) is a fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, class Agaricomycetes, and family Ganodermataceae. It is a well-known white-rot fungus that functions both as a parasite and a saprotroph, playing a significant role in the degradation of woody tissues in various host plants.

Diseases and host plants: This phytopathogen is a primary cause of white rot, which results in the breakdown of lignin and cellulose within the host's wood. It frequently infects a wide range of broad-leaved trees, including orchard species such as apple and pear trees, as well as forest trees like oak, beech, and birch. Infection typically occurs through wounds, broken branches, or improper pruning cuts.

Biology and life cycle: The mycelium of the fungus penetrates the heartwood, consuming nutrients and causing structural decay. The fungus produces large, woody, perennial fruiting bodies (conks) characterized by a brown, hard surface and a white pore surface that bruises brown when touched. During the sporulation phase, millions of spores are released into the air, spreading the infection to nearby susceptible trees.

Developmental conditions and harm: The pathogen thrives in high-humidity environments and is particularly attracted to physiologically weakened trees. The harmful impact of this fungus is cumulative; it gradually weakens the tree's internal structure, often leading to heart rot. As the wood decays, the tree loses mechanical strength, eventually becoming prone to snapping or falling, which poses significant safety risks in both orchards and urban areas.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of Ganoderma applanatum focuses on prevention and maintaining tree vigor:

  • Regular inspection of trees to detect the early presence of fruiting bodies.
  • Prompt removal and disposal of heavily infected limbs and trees to reduce the spore load.
  • Protecting wounds and pruning sites with appropriate sealing agents to prevent fungal entry.
  • Maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization, watering, and pest management to minimize vulnerability.
