Diseases and host plants. The primary host for this fungus is the black currant (Ribes nigrum). It causes a disease characterized by the appearance of dark spots on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, the fungal growth can lead to leaf senescence and premature defoliation, which negatively impacts the overall health and vigor of the currant bushes within the plantation.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Gibbera compacta involves both asexual and sexual stages. Asexual conidia are responsible for secondary infections during the growing season, spreading via rain splashes and wind. The fungus overwinters primarily as pseudothecia on fallen leaves or infected shoots. Upon the arrival of spring moisture and appropriate temperatures, it releases ascospores that initiate primary infections on emerging vegetation.

Conditions for development and impact. The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Prolonged wet weather significantly enhances the dispersal of spores and the rate of infection. The economic impact is linked to the loss of photosynthetic area, which reduces the plant's capacity to accumulate nutrients, resulting in smaller fruit yields and increased susceptibility to environmental stresses.

Protection and control measures. Management of Gibbera compacta requires an integrated approach to maintain plantation health. Essential practices include the physical removal and destruction of infected plant debris during the autumn and winter periods to reduce the primary inoculum load. During the growing season, strategic application of fungicides, particularly those targeting ascomycetes, is recommended to prevent widespread infection during high-risk humidity events.
