Systematic position and characteristics: Gibberella cyanogena (anamorph Fusarium sulphureum) is a filamentous fungus belonging to the Nectriaceae family. As a specialized plant pathogen, it acts as a primary agent of decay in various underground plant organs. The fungus is highly adapted to surviving in hostile environments and produces specialized structures to withstand seasonal fluctuations in temperature and moisture.

Diseases and host plants: The fungus is primarily known for causing dry rot in potatoes, a devastating post-harvest disease. It also affects a wide range of other crops, including sugar beets, carrots, and several vegetables. The infection manifests as sunken lesions on the skin, followed by internal tissue necrosis, where the infected parts become brittle, shriveled, and hollowed out by fungal mycelium.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves both sexual (perithecia) and asexual (conidia) stages. The fungus survives primarily in the soil and on crop debris as chlamydospores, which are extremely resilient. Upon finding a suitable host with mechanical damage or physiological vulnerability, the pathogen initiates infection, rapidly colonizing the plant tissue and secreting enzymes that break down cell walls.

Development and pathogenicity: Pathogenesis is favored by moderate temperatures (typically 15–25°C) and the presence of moisture. Gibberella cyanogena is highly virulent; once an infection site is established, it can spread rapidly throughout stored crops. The disease is characterized by a significant loss of dry matter, making the harvest unsuitable for processing or human consumption, and it often paves the way for secondary soft rot bacteria.

Control and management: Controlling this pathogen requires a holistic strategy aimed at reducing initial inoculum and protecting host tissues:

  • Handling crops carefully to prevent mechanical injuries during harvest.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce soil-borne pathogen load.
  • Utilizing disease-resistant cultivars and healthy seed tubers.
  • Treating seed potatoes with approved fungicides before planting.
  • Maintaining optimal ventilation and low temperatures in storage facilities to arrest mycelial growth.
