Gibberella saubinettii (anamorph: Fusarium graminearum) is an ascomycete fungus of the Nectriaceae family. It is recognized globally as a primary pathogen responsible for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) in small grain cereals and ear rot in maize, posing significant threats to agricultural productivity and grain quality.
The host range of this fungus includes wheat, barley, maize, rye, and oats. Infection typically results in premature bleaching of spikelets and the development of a characteristic pink or orange fungal mycelium on the rachis and glumes. Beyond yield reduction, the fungus contaminates grains with dangerous mycotoxins like deoxynivalenol (DON), posing serious health risks to consumers.
The life cycle involves both sexual (ascospores produced in perithecia) and asexual (macroconidia) stages. The fungus overwinters in crop residues such as corn stalks or wheat stubble. In spring and summer, under suitable environmental conditions, spores are disseminated by wind and rain splash to the host plants, specifically targeting the flower spikes during the flowering stage.
Environmental requirements for rapid disease spread include high humidity levels and moderate to warm temperatures, typically between +20°C and +28°C. Periods of rainfall during the anthesis (flowering) of cereals create the ideal window for infection. Poor crop residue management, such as no-till farming without sufficient decomposition, significantly enhances the inoculum potential in fields.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. This includes crop rotation to avoid high-risk successions, the use of resistant crop varieties, and proper tillage to bury infected debris. Fungicide applications, particularly triazoles, are crucial when applied at the onset of flowering. Additionally, seed treatments are necessary to control seedling blight and systemic colonization of the plant.
