Gibberella xylarioides is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Nectriaceae family. It is recognized primarily as the causal agent of vascular wilt, commonly referred to as coffee tracheomycosis, which has caused significant economic damage to coffee cultivation, particularly in African countries.

The fungus specifically targets plants of the Coffea genus. By colonizing the plant's xylem vessels, Gibberella xylarioides obstructs the transport of water and nutrients. This physiological disruption leads to the characteristic symptoms: yellowing of the leaves, wilting, and eventually the death of the entire plant.

The biological life cycle of this pathogen involves both sexual (ascospores) and asexual (conidia) reproduction, the latter associated with the Fusarium xylarioides state. These spores are highly mobile and can be spread through contaminated tools, rainfall, and wind. The pathogen is soil-borne, meaning it can persist in plant debris for several years.

The disease flourishes under conditions of high humidity and warm temperatures, which are typical for many coffee-producing regions. Infection risk is exacerbated by poor plantation hygiene and mechanical damage to the roots or trunks during maintenance activities, as these wounds provide entry points for the fungal mycelium.

Management strategies focus on containment and prevention to mitigate the impact of this pathogen:

  • Rigorous quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infected nursery plants.
  • Deployment of resistant coffee cultivars and varieties in high-risk areas.
  • Immediate removal and disposal of diseased trees, including their root systems.
  • Sanitation protocols, including the thorough disinfection of pruning shears and other tools.
  • Implementing integrated pest management to ensure robust plant health and lower susceptibility to infection.
